It’s SPRING BREAK! Well, for some of you. Others go next week. And some have a year round thing where they get off every 2nd Thursday for the rest of the year causing global chaos and parental madness. But whatever your schedule, there’s always a weekend, and always some fun and low cost ways to enjoy it with your kids. Here are my top 5 LA picks: Leonis Adobe Spring Event Calabasas You can’t go wrong with an egg hunt this weekend, and although there are a ton of them all around LA, I would never forgive myself if I didn’t mention the Leonis Adobe Spring Event. It’s taking place on Saturday, March 28th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at the Leonis Adobe Museum and will have all the fun features of the museum like live animals, ranch activities, crafts, and music, plus an egg hunt at 2pm! It’s $4 per person and you can visit their website for details. It’s fun, cheap, and enclosed so your little ones can’t get far. A Valley Must-Do. Bookfest at Grand Park Downtown LA Book lovers, unite! There’s an event at Grand Park that will cause you to jump for actual joy. Bookfest at Grand Park in Los Angeles is free and has an incredible lineup of book related fun. Activities include poem writing, book swaps, story circles, bookmaking, and of course some of Artizen Lab's (the online platform sponsoring the event) top ideas out for all to try. Explore a crowd-sourced exhibit of photos and take your own with at The Community Camera; create your own five-word poem and add it to an installation in Grand Park at Fill the Well; paint with others and let your brushstrokes blend into one large sheet music that'll be interpreted and played in the moment by musicians at Los Angeles Sheet Music. You can get the details on their website. *Actual Joy Included Calabasas USTA Men’s Pro Tennis Championships Kids Day Calabasas Love tennis? Or just love watching the pros do all the work while you sip a fizzy drink? Either way the adult tennis fun gives way to a cool kid’s event on Saturday, March 28th, from 1:30-3:00 pm at the Calabasas Tennis and Swim Center. Your kids can participate in drills and games in a carnival atmosphere, plus enjoy a Q & A with a Pro Circuit Player. It’s a free event that also gets you into the day session semi-finals and you can get the details here. An event the whole family can enjoy-with or without fizzy drink. Sundays in the Park Simi Valley So there are a zillion things to do on Saturday, but what about the poor, neglected Sunday afternoon? Give Sunday some sugar by attending the Sundays in the Park event in Simi at the Whizin Center for Continuing Education, Brandeis-Bardin Campus. Sunday, March 29th, between noon and 4pm you can play on the rock climbing wall, ropes tower, archery, games and sports, and more. It’s $5 for anyone 4 and over and everyone else is free. Visit here for tickets and details. Basically it’s a giant, well-attended playground for all ages. I think that’s perfect for a Sunday! Getty Family Spring Festival Sepulveda Pass If you are looking for a Westside gathering that the whole family will enjoy, consider the Getty Family Spring Festival, aiming to celebrate play in all of it’s forms. It’s Saturday, March 28th, from 10am-6pm at the Getty Center in the Sepulveda Pass and is free (besides parking) to attend. Storytelling and music mix with pattycake, cat’s cradle, hopscotch, chess, cards, board games, pick up sticks, ping pong and even a Getty-wide scavenger hunt are all part of the festivities. St. Patrick's Day is SOO FUN! Except when it's on a Tuesday... then it blows. So take advantage of the pre-party weekend and do some family adventuring. Here are my top 5 picks for family fun with kids this weekend: St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Agoura Hills Are ya ready for a little luck of the Irish? Well, you can give it your best shot during the St. Patty’s Day celebration at the Agoura Hills Calabasas Community Center. It’s on Saturday, March 14th from 11 am to 3pm at the AHCCC and the party is going to be incredible: face Painting, rock climbing, inflatable rides, photo shoots, and use of the center all day. You don’t even need to find a pot of gold to pay for it, because it’s free! Visit their website for details. It’s going to be a lucky day, I can feel it. Some even say lucky and charmed… Free Opera Northridge Want your kids exposed to music a little bit more complicated than “Shake it Off”? You have a fun and free opportunity with the LA Opera this weekend, who will present two free "Great Opera Choruses" concerts at 2pm and 3:30pm on March 14th. These family friendly concerts are being held at the Valley Performing Arts Center in Northridge and you can get details at 818.677.3000 or LAOpera.org. You can even sing along to pieces from The Marriage of Figaro and Carmen. Don’t know the words? Just sing “peas and carrots” and you’ll be fine. Civil War Living History Day San Marino The Huntington Gardens is a great place to visit, but when you get some “re-enactors” involved, you can’t KEEP me away! Saturday March 14th from 11am-4pm you and the kids can step back in time to the Civil War era as the New Buffalo Soldiers bring history alive with a realistic encampment on the Huntington grounds and demonstrations of camp life. There’s also a band, a film screeningn, and children’s crafts. The whole event is covered by your general admission so make sure you check their website for info. So much better than being at the Civil War when it actually happened. Walt Disney’s Barn Public Day Griffith Park Want Disney fun without the Disneyland part? What if it involved trains, too? Perfection, right? Every third Sunday Walt Disney’s Carolwood Barn at the LA Live Steamers area of Griffith Park is open and free. That means this Sunday, March 15th, from 11am to 3pm you can visit this cool feature and explore all the trains your kids can handle. Visit their website for details. Be warned, you may tire out before your kids do. (Wait, isn't that every day?) Airport Artwalk Santa Monica Using an airport for boarding airplanes is so boring. Spice up your airport experience by heading to the Airport Artwalk! It’s Saturday, March 14th, from noon to 5 pm at the Santa Monica Airport, and you can explore open studios, watch art and ceramic demonstrations, participate in art and theater workshops, and enjoy live music and food trucks in the airport’s converted airplane hangars. It’s free, parking is free, and there is a bike valet! It's the cheapest experience at an airport you will have all year!
