Just when you eased back into a routine involving the kids happily back at school…THEY GET ANOTHER DAY OFF! If you need a little help finding fun activities for you and your kids over the long weekend, I'm here to help. Here are my top 5 picks for Family Activities in LA this weekend: MLK Peace and Unity Parade Celebration Long Beach There is a pretty good reason that your kids are off of school this week, it’s to celebrate the life and message of Martin Luther King Jr. So, why not celebrate? If you are in the Long Beach area, check out the MLK parade and festival on Monday, January 19th. The parade that begins at 10:30 on Martin Luther King Jr. Ave and Anaheim St, then continues north to MLK Jr. park where the free festival runs from 12:30-5 pm. You can get the details here. It's a fun way to teach your kids about one of our greatest teachers. Beach Clean Up Malibu We did see a little bit of rain recently, and while that is good news for our vegetation, it’s not so great for our beaches. Rain carries tons of pollution down to our beaches by our storm drain system and it’s up to us, with a little help from Heal the Bay, to clean it up. Take the family and join Heal the Bay’s “Nothin but Sand” beach cleanup event this Saturday, January 17th, from 10-11:30 am at the Will Rogers State Beach at the end of Temescal Canyon Rd. Make sure to register and get all the info at www.healthebay.org. The cleanup is rain or shine and will be cancelled only if there is a risk of lightning. And just a friendly tip, you should never go in the water when there is lightning. Or sharks. Or the Zombie Apocalypse. Star Party Oak Park The weather has been cool enough in the evenings to dust off those…what are they called again? Right, jackets. But the cool crisp weather also lends itself to some amazing stargazing. This Saturday, January 17, you can join up with the Oak Canyon Astronomy Group’s Star Party at Oak Canyon Park. Dress warmly and visit the park from 7-10 pm to get a great view with some knowledgeable people. It’s free, and you can get more info here. You bought that jacket thingy, might as well get some use out of it. Lakeshore Learning Free Science Fair All Locations Lakeshore Learning Store is always a fun place to visit with kids, and even kill and hour or two out of the rain or sun (depending on which side of the city you are on). But this Saturday, there’s ANOTHER great way to kill time with your kids and even have some – gasp – learning thrown in there too! This Saturday, January 17th, from 11-3 all Lakeshore stores are holding a free STEM Science Fair. There are activities, experiments, and even a catapult-making craft. Visit www.lakeshorelearning.com to find the closest store to you. A suggestion? Don’t tell your kids about the learning part. Just sneak it in there. Family Nature Walk Topanga If spending time outdoors is more your game, but you get overwhelmed by your kids dawdling or wandering, you may want to give this simple guided tour a try. The Family Nature Walk is at Topanga State Park, Trippet Rance at Entrada Rd, from 10-12 on Sunday, January 18th. It’s made for kids and will have tons of cool insight into this gorgeous state park. Plus it’s free, and you can let the rangers keep your kids attention! There is so much less wandering and dawdling when someone else is leading, right?
